Arsenic-sulfur speciation – a potential key to understanding arsenic accumulation and mobilisation in sulfidic aquifers of Bangladesh

The objective of the project was to refine and extend the model for arsenic mobilization and fate in Bangladesh considering the potential impact of organic and sulfuric arsenic species. Specific goals were to investigate depth-dependent and seasonal changes with focus on changes in pH, redox potential and the redox-sensitive elements As, P, S, N, Fe, and Mn with a high temporal resolution, correlate these changes to sediment properties and model arsenic sorption and mobilization in sediments from different depths in laboratory batch and column experiments with special focus on the individual arsenic species and competition with phosphate.
